The Unplanned Pursuit

A passion was discovered on accident.

Catherine Kent was out with a photographer friend in 2017 taking photos for her fashion blog, but the session wasn’t going as expected. After some time, Catherine felt inclined to ask her friend if she could take some photos of her and her kids since they were along for the shoot too.

Her friend loved the idea and put her camera in Catherine’s hands. The final products were great, and her friend posted the photos to Facebook. Unexpectedly, Catherine received seven photoshoot inquires soon after.

“That was when I knew this was something to look at and possibly pursue,” Catherine said.

Her uncle surprised her with a Nikon D3100 for her 25th birthday, and CK Photography was birthed.

The creator’s first clients were church friends. Although it was nerve wracking to put her new-found passion to the test, she was grateful that her friends recognized her talent and sometimes booked her for multiple occasions.

Catherine describes the early stages of building her business as good and difficult. The good came from having new clients and the difficult came from figuring out the administrative side of having a business.

“The joys of getting to experience those new things and the new milestones you reach in a business definitely inspired me to keep going,” Catherine said.

The photographer’s first year in business was slow but opportunities came gradually. Business picked up a lot in 2018, and she began to see success with having more clientele along with having the freedom to devote herself to her business.

On the other hand, 2018 was her most challenging and learning year. It was tough balancing clients, juggling deadlines and researching new software.

“I felt like wanting to give up this past winter,” Catherine said.

The creative decided to not make giving up an option and decided to make her challenges opportunities to learn. Her roadblocks taught her how to handle time frames and how to organize her responsibilities.

“It falls in line with learning as you go and bumping your head a little bit along the way,” Catherine said.

Keeping the Lord first has been her guiding force and motivation to keep going. Catherine also keeps her dreams and goals at the forefront of her mind.

“When I feel like giving up, I have to suck it up and get it together and remember how great I have it to be able to create my own schedule and carve my own path,” Catherine said.

The family and personal branding photographer is excited to one day be a full-time entrepreneur and expand into doing environmental and travel photography.
